A precise description brings the right ones

"Looking for a CNC operator with 3+ years of experience on a Mazak Integrex 200 (5-axis) with Mazatrol control, able to read drawings to the ISO GPS standard, working with micrometers and a Mitutoyo 3D measuring machine, in 2 shifts, and willing to work a 6-day week in peak season."

2. Positions and requirements

CNC turner (lathe operator)

At least 2 years on CNC lathes and experience with one of the common controls: Siemens Sinumerik, FANUC, Heidenhain, Mazak Mazatrol or Okuma OSP. The operator reads technical drawings (ISO, DIN, ANSI) and works with measuring tools.

Gross salary 2026: Germany €2,900–3,800, Italy €2,000–2,800.

CNC mill operator

At least 2 years, the same control systems as above, and experience with 3-axis, 4-axis or 5-axis milling. The operator should know several materials: steel, aluminium, plastics and corrosion-resistant metals.

MIG/MAG welder

At least 2 years and an EN ISO 9606-1 certificate that covers the specific positions (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G), materials (carbon steel, stainless steel) and thicknesses you need.

TIG welder

At least 3 years, because TIG takes more skill. The welder needs EN ISO 9606-1 for TIG (process 141) with stainless steel and aluminium, and experience with thin material.

A trade test: the worker records a video working on a specific machine (Mazak Integrex, Haas, DMG MORI)
References from previous employers, including work quality and scrap rate
Validity of the welding certificate (EN ISO 9606-1)
Medical fitness for shift work
The documents needed for a seasonal or annual permit

Pitfall 1: "They can learn on the job"

A CNC machine worth €200,000–800,000 is no place for beginners. A single mistake costs €5,000–30,000.

Pitfall 2: False welding certificates

EN ISO 9606-1 certificates are time-limited (3 years for most). Check their validity and who issued them (an accredited notified body).

Pitfall 3: The wrong control system

The candidate says they are a CNC operator, and on the job it turns out they don't know Mazatrol. Learning the system takes 2–3 weeks, and during that time the operator works at about 30% productivity.

Pitfall 4: A seasonal permit for year-round production

If production runs all year, a seasonal permit (6 months) won't cover it. You need a standard permit.

Pitfall 5: No plan for language

A CNC operator from Nepal who doesn't speak the local language will struggle to communicate on the shop floor. Basic English is a must, and the worker should learn the local language within the first 3 months.

Ask for a trade test: the candidate records 2–3 minute videos of work on the specific machine (Mazak, Haas, DMG MORI).

Can I have a mixed team of local and foreign workers?

Yes, and it often works best. Local workers take senior positions and lead or supervise the shifts, while foreign workers cover operational production and shift work. The team communicates in the local language, in English and with some basic words in the workers' language.

What if a machine breaks because of a CNC operator's mistake?

Three things protect you:

Probation period (up to 6 months): you can end the employment without giving a reason
Replacement guarantee: it runs for 60 days from the worker's first working day and covers every reason on the worker's side, including not turning up, not being able to do the job, not wanting to work or causing problems. The replacement comes at no additional fee.
Liability for damage: a worker is liable only for intentional or grossly negligent damage, not for ordinary mistakes
